GURU PRABHE

When Lord Dattatreya could learn from twenty-four Gurus found in nature, we—ordinary humans—certainly need the guidance of a true Guru to realize the ultimate purpose of life: to live righteously as human beings and progress toward the Divine.
The Guru Gita is a sacred scripture found in the Skanda Purana. The Guru Gita is a divine discourse between Lord Parameshwara and Goddess Parvati, containing 173 verses that beautifully describe the glory, role, and necessity of the Guru. Even the daily recitation of a few verses from this text grants profound spiritual insight. Such wisdom literature brings peace and solace to people living stressful, modern lives. We pray that more such works continue to reach society.

Blessings to Shri S. L. Gururaj
With reverence to Lord Narayana, we offer our blessings to Shri S. L. Gururaj. His compilation, Guru Prabhe, is truly exceptional. Just as the gods have Brihaspati as their Guru and the demons have Shukracharya, humans too require a Guru. The very word Guru means:

'Gu' – darkness
'Ru' – the one who removes it
Thus, the Guru is the one who dispels the darkness of ignorance and leads us toward the light of knowledge. Through the Guru alone can the true goal of life be achieved.

In the Satya Yuga, Dakshinamurthy was the supreme Guru; in the Treta Yuga, it was Lord Dattatreya (during the Ramayana period); in the Dvapara Yuga, Sage Vedavyasa (during the Mahabharata period); and in the Kali Yuga, it is Adi Shankaracharya.
Lord Dattatreya accepted twenty-four forms of Gurus in the Treta Yuga—drawn from the five elements, the five senses, animals controlled by particular senses (such as the fish, elephant, deer, moth, and bee), as well as the sun, moon, serpent, ocean, child, dancer, spider, pigeon, hawk, arrow-maker, and many others.

A Humble Tribute at the Guru’s Feet
In most countries, the word Guru is used only in a limited, practical sense. But in Indian culture, the Guru is revered as equal to God. This is our ancient tradition. Every individual in our land shapes their life under the guidance of a Guru—whether in spiritual, educational, or practical matters. Learning is essential in every field, and so is the presence of a teacher.

Today the world is racing ahead with scientific achievements, yet inner peace and true joy seem elusive. People everywhere are seeking mental calmness and happiness. Spirituality is the only lasting solution. For this reason, the whole world now looks to India’s spiritual wisdom with deep interest, eager to study and practise it. But spiritual attainment is not easy; without the Guru’s guidance, no goal can be reached.

A Guru awakens inner awareness. Only those who live in a Guru’s presence truly understand how the Guru protects and guides at every step. A Guru alone can lead the seeker to the destined goal.
In Guru Prabhe, the profound teachings on the Guru—expressed through the dialogue between Lord Rudra and Goddess Parvati—have been presented in simple Kannada. Every line is filled with deep meaning. It is a rare and precious work, immensely beneficial to readers, especially as it is being released on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima.
